Interview with fired #AppleToo organizer

Earlier this month, Apple fired Janneke Parrish, a leader of the # AppleToo movement who has been organizing fellow workers who have suffered harassment and discrimination. It appears Apple is clamping down on those activities - under the guise that it is trying to stop information from leaking to the press. Apple fired Ashley Gjovik for allegedly violating her confidentiality agreement in September.

Parrish's lawyer, Vincent P. White of White, Hilferty, and Albanese, tells The Verge that Parrish plans to sue for wrongful termination. During an interview with The Verge, Parish discussed her organizing efforts and the circumstances surrounding her termination.

You've been advocating internally with the Correspondence of Antonio Garcia Martinez, right? How has that been for you?

Interview with fired #AppleToo organizer

I was in the remote work advocacy channel on Slack at the time, wanting the best decision for people regarding how and where they work. That was the first real-time I saw employee activism having an impact at Apple.

We also learned that activism can be effective in the form of letters like the Antonio Garcia Martinez letter, which led to further correspondence from the remote workgroup requesting flexibility in the workplace. We didn't get the same response this time - the answer was basically, "We should be in the office." Employee advocacy is important for making our voices heard, but we're limited in how much we can do internally.
