Hon. Ed Broadbent Obituary & Funeral on Sunday January 28, 2024

Ed Broadbent Obituary - Ed Broadbent, who served as the leader of the New Democratic Party in the past, will be laid to rest on Sunday at 4 o'clock in the afternoon at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre, which is located at 355 Cooper Street.

On January 11th, Broadbent passed away at the age of 87.

Since the memorial service for former Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn was held in 2002, this will be the first state funeral to be held in Ottawa.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE A STATE FUNERAL?

It is a public event that is typically held to honor former governors general, prime ministers, and cabinet members who passed away while serving in their positions. However, the government reserves the right to honor other "eminent" Canadians, as is the case with Broadbent.

It is the responsibility of the governor-general-in-council to organize the funerals, which are intended to provide a "dignified manner" for all Canadians to mourn the loss of a national public figure.

A member of Parliament for a total of 25 years, Broadbent also held the position of federal NDP leader for a period of fourteen years. For twenty-three years, he was the representative for the Oshawa-Whitney riding, and from 2004 to 2006, he was also the representative for the Ottawa Centre riding.

His funeral was the first time that a state funeral was held for a party leader who had not previously served as either the prime minister or an official opposition leader.

During the hours of sunrise to sunset on Sunday, the flags of all buildings and establishments owned and operated by the Government of Canada, including the Peace Tower located on Parliament Hill, will be flown at half-mast. Between the 15th and 17th of January, flags were lowered as a mark of respect for Broadbent.

WHO IS MEANT TO ATTEND?

Despite the fact that the precise list of attendees has not been made public, it is expected that the current New Democratic Party will be well represented, in addition to Broadbent's family and friends. Broadbent was a respected figure among a large number of Conservative and Liberal politicians throughout his entire career. He served as a mentor to a great number of people.

WHO IS GOING TO PERFORM?

A prayer of honor on behalf of the Anishinaabe people will be delivered by Algonquin Elder Claudette Commanda. Daniel Taylor, who is both a conductor and a countertenor, will be in charge of the performance of the National Arts Centre Orchestra. There will also be performances by the soprano Andriana Chuchman, the cellist Julian Armour, and the organist Matthew Larkin, who is a member of the Choir of the Theatre of Early Music Concert.

There is not going to be a parade. Additionally, there will be no lying-in-state or lying in repose, as this is something that Broadbent's family has requested.

ARE THE PEOPLE ABLE TO ATTEND?

On the website of The Broadbent Institute, which can be found at https://www.broadbentinstitute.ca/, individuals who are interested in attending the state funeral are encouraged to register; however, it is important to note that registration is limited.

An online book of condolences can be found at https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/commemoration/ed-broadbent/book. The family would be grateful for any expressions of support that are posted in this book.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Broadbent Institute, Amnesty International, or Doctors Without Borders so that they can continue their work.

In addition to being broadcast live on CBC, the ceremony will also be broadcast live on the Facebook and YouTube channels of Canadian Heritage.

ARE THE STREETS GOING TO BE CLOSED?

Indeed. Between the hours of 12:30 and 6 o'clock on Sunday, O'Connor Street will be closed between Lisgar Street and Cooper Street, and Cooper Street will be closed between Bank Street and O'Connor Street. Both closures will take place, respectively.

At the same time, the parking lot at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre will also be closed to the public.

The access with vehicles will be granted to those who are residents of the area, those who have official passes for the ceremony, and those who are responding to an emergency.
