Why choose ceec Loan?

Objectives of the Zambia Aquaculture Enterprise Development Project

The primary aim of ZAEDP is to foster economic growth and enhance food and nutrition security in Zambia. The project seeks to elevate the aquaculture sub-sector, transforming it into a sustainable and inclusive business avenue. By boosting production and productivity, the initiative aims to improve the livelihoods of participants throughout the Aquaculture Value Chain. The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock oversees the execution of this project, with the Department of Fisheries handling the implementation

Role of the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC)

The CEEC has been designated as the Implementing Partner for the Aquaculture Seed Fund component. It is tasked with providing business loans to Zambian youth (aged 21 to 35), youth-owned companies, and youth cooperatives. These loans are intended to support the development of businesses that operate within the Aquaculture Value Chain.

Projects Supported Under the CEEC Loan

The funding supports a variety of aquaculture activities, including:

  • Fingerling production
  • Fish feed production
  • Growout operations (fish production)
  • Fish aggregation and marketing
  • Fish processing and value addition

These projects primarily focus on the cultivation of tilapia (bream) and catfish (known locally as Mulonge, Mulamba, Ndombe, among others).

Eligibility

The Ceec Loan Zambia, under the Aquaculture Seed Fund Youth Empowerment Initiative, provides a unique opportunity for Zambian youths to engage in and expand their business ventures within the aquaculture industry. To ensure the success and sustainability of these ventures, the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) has set specific eligibility criteria aimed at identifying candidates who are best positioned to benefit from and contribute to this sector. Below is a detailed description of the eligible applicants:

Market-Oriented Smallholder Youth Farmers’/Producer Groups

These are groups of young farmers who are already engaged in or are looking to start aquaculture-related activities. These groups should demonstrate a clear market-oriented approach, meaning their operations should be aimed at meeting the demands of the local, regional, or international markets. This includes having a business model that supports scalability and sustainability.

Youths Incubated and Trained by ZAEDP

Individuals who have undergone training and incubation programs under the Zambia Aquaculture Enterprise Development Project (ZAEDP) are eligible. These programs are designed to equip young entrepreneurs with the necessary skills, knowledge, and tools to manage successful aquaculture enterprises. The training covers various aspects of the business, including financial management, production techniques, and market access strategies.

Registered Youth Associations or Cooperatives of Farmers/Producers

This category includes formally registered groups that are recognized by legal authorities and consist predominantly of youths engaged in the aquaculture sector. These associations or cooperatives should have a governance structure, a clear business plan, and a track record of collaboration among members. Their registration ensures a level of commitment and organization, which is crucial for the success of their ventures.

Every Other Successful Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Aquaculture Value Chain Youth Entrepreneur

This broad category encompasses a wide range of participants in the aquaculture value chain. It includes:

  • Traders: Young entrepreneurs involved in buying and selling aquaculture products. They play a crucial role in bridging the gap between producers and the market.

  • Processors: This group focuses on the transformation of raw aquaculture products into finished goods. They add value and extend the shelf-life of products, thus enhancing profitability.

  • Cold Chain and Logistical Service Providers: These are entrepreneurs who provide essential services that ensure the quality and safety of aquaculture products as they move from farms to markets. Their services are vital in maintaining the integrity of food products.

  • Large Fish Farmers: Youth who operate on a larger scale, managing extensive aquaculture farms that contribute significantly to the supply chain.

  • Private Sector Suppliers of Implements and Services: This includes young entrepreneurs who supply farming tools, feeds, equipment, and other services necessary for the operation of aquaculture enterprises.
